hello there.

Well, whaddya wanna know?  Here's the plain and simple truth:  My name is Rebekah Tennis and I love design.  I love paper, the way it feels, its weight and texture.  I love extra special touches on little things: homemade tags on gift-wrap, old stamps on an envelope, and twine on nearly everything.

My husband, business partner and all-around solid rock Matt would probably tell you that he likes tools - lots of 'em, finding the perfect way to do something, taking things apart, and precision in everything.

So you might as well have guessed by now... we are the perfect match for an old letterpress studio. Together we farm rice and have a small but adorable two-year old son, Cameron.  This keeps us fairly busy, but whenever we have a spare moment, we crank up our 102 year old Chandler and Price platen press and pull some prints.

There's more, oh yes, there IS more - but that's what this blog is for.  Take a look around, get to know us, our great town of Chico, California and our beautiful presses.

kitchen remodel: source list

Well, we made it through kitchen week!  I hope yesterday’s post didn’t kill you – it was so loooooong.  Just understand, I felt a need to show my gratitude towards the people who graciously put their time into making a “how-to” so that complete strangers can have an easier time doing projects.  And wanted to offer in some small way a few things I learned doing my own DIY.

We’ll have some new stationery to share with y’all soon, I promise! The Christmas line is coming…

But, to wrap this all up, I promised a source list.  Now, the list part is easy, but since we were going for the best deals we could find on anything (hello, overstock.com!) a lot of inventory was clearance or is not available anymore.  But there probably is something similar out there for you, if you just search hard!  Here goes…

Kitchen Source List:

Faucet: Price Pfister Ashfield Chrome Two-Handle Pull Down Bridge Faucet, Polished Nickel (Overstock.com – now sold out, available on Amazon for about $50 more than we paid for it)

Ashfield_Chrome_faucetSoap Dispenser: Used existing one.

Sink: Belle Foret Farmhouse Sink – Fireclay, Apron Front, Undermount, 30″ (Vintage Tub and Bath, still available, although very sadly the price has increased by about $270!! Shipping is still free.)

Belle_Foret_Sink
Disposal: Badger 9 Insinkerator (Home Depot) Matt installed this, the sink, faucet and dishwasher.

Badger9

Dishwasher: Bosch 24″ Built-in, Black (bought on sale at Lowes).  The model that is one up from the most basic.  We love it – it’s very energy efficient, fast and quiet. I love the half-load feature, and fact that the dry cycle uses the steam from the water cycle, eliminating the need for a heated dry.

Bosch_DishwasherMicrowave: Kept existing one.

Oven: Kept existing one.

Rangetop: 36″ Burner Bertazzoni Commercial Gas Range top (A M Royal – they offered free shipping and were about $50 cheaper last year) This was one of our two big splurges (the countertops being the other).  I really wanted six burners and commercial-style power, because we love to cook.  Let me tell you, it has been worth every penny and the italian-made range is awesome!  If there’s one place you would spend extra for quality on in your kitchen, let it be your stove and not lights or door pulls or something silly like that.  A kitchen is for cooking. Matt installed this.

BertazzoniRange Hood: Zephyr 36″ Stainless Steel Savona Wall Hood (ABT Electronics)  If you get a commercial range, a hefty hood is in order.  This one was the best deal I could find with free shipping and the correct CFM circulation.

zephyr_hoodDucting: We had to move the duct to work with the new hood.  Sort of an unforeseen (expensive) ducting disaster. I can’t recommend the folks we used, it cost an arm and a leg for 20 minutes of work and Matt still had to install the range hood by himself.

Refrigerator: Kept existing one.

Pendant Lights: Rustic Glass Pendant (2) (Pottery Barn, bought on special – they are actually on special again right now)

Rustic_Glass_PendantCountertops: 3 cm Honed Carrara Marble Slabs (2) from Bedrosians in Sacramento.  Fabrication by Benchmark in Chico (Ogee edge, Christopher Peacock  style corners).  We also used the remnants around our fireplace, and to make two imposing stone carts for the letterpress studio. This was the other big splurge (although about the same as granite) – I love Carrara, and love these counters.  They are classic and last a lifetime.

Backsplash Tile: Daltile Rittenhouse Square subway matte arctic white with light gray grout.  Bought from Dal Tile in Chico.  This tile is a fabulous deal!

Cabinets: Painted the oak black DIY, with new doors and trim. All incredible carpentry work by Carl Lee at D’Amato & Lee in Paradise, CA. (They did our beamed ceiling as well).

Cabinet Paint: Benjamin Moore Custom Black Satin Impervo, with an undercoat of Benjamin Moore Heritage Red (also Impervo) and Killz oil based primer.  All cabinet paint was oil based. All purchased at Chico Paint Mart, our local Benjamin Moore Shop.

Cabinet Glass: Seeded Glass, from Miller Glass in Chico. It was a great deal!

Wall Paint: Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray (I love this gray, it’s in our dining room too).

Inside Cabinet Paint: We painted the bead board inside the glass cabinets Benjamin Moore Feather Gray.

Flooring: Vanier Unfinished Hand Scraped Hardwood Flooring Walnut / 9/16″x5″x Random Lengths. (Sadly, no longer sold by Build Direct) It was an amazingly cheap $3.78 a sf, and we love it. We love the walnut, it’s so warm and friendly.  This was done in tandem with the whole house, and was the reason the kitchen remodel came to be.

Hardware: Clear Glass Knob with Black Base (on glass doors – Cool Knobs and Pulls), Bin Pulls Gilmore 4 inch Polished Nickel (Restoration Hardware – on sale), Deco Rings Knob, Polished Nickel (on regular doors – Rejuvenation, great deal), Breadboard knob & backplate (mini-size, Horton Brasses).

Well, there you go.  If this even helps one small person in one small project on their home, I’ll be pretty happy.

Thanks for the ride – and I’m sure glad our Kitchen is finished!

October 8, 2009 - 2:51 pm Lisa Ridgely - I have enjoyed seeing the steps of your remodel so much this week! You have actually helped me out tremendously...we are about to move into a new home, and I just posted earlier this week about looking for the perfect gray paint, and that Benjamin Moore Stonington Gray looks fantastic - definitely going on my list! I also have a dark cherry coffee table I want to paint white, but I wasn't sure how to go about it, and the process you used for your cabinets seems like it would work perfectly! Your kitchen is definitely amazing - one of my most favorite before/afters! I love every detail!

October 9, 2009 - 3:29 pm rebekah - Thanks so much, Lisa! You are really very kind. Yeah, I tried closed to 20 samples of Benjamin Moore gray (the 2 oz jars) to pick all of the grays in my house! They make some really great shades of gray - which can be a tricky color. Good luck with your painting - I'm sure it will be awesome!

October 14, 2009 - 3:16 pm karen - Your kitchen remodel is gorgeous! I am drooling! Your attention to detail really paid off. I love love love the lightly distressed cabinets. It must have taken you forever to do all the coats of paint and sanding, but the look is well worth it. Also- the honed marble counter tops? To die for! I am dreaming of remodeling my kitchen, so I love to look around the internet for inspiration, ideas and trips from people who have already done it. There is a lot of inspiration to be had on your blog! I found your blog after seeing your fridge makeover on design*sponge. Unfortunately my kitchen has to be a total gut job (=$$$), b/c there is nothing worth keeping (crappy 1960's pressed board cabinets, and plastic drawers- ick!) and the layout is horrendous, so I don't think I'll be able to get the higher end appliances that I would have liked. Again, your kitchen is beautiful!

March 25, 2010 - 2:14 pm Kimberly - Hi again!! I was thinking about painting my 14yr old boys room a gray. Do you have any suggestions? Also do you have more pics of the rest of your house? Love love your style! Always, Kimberly

May 11, 2010 - 11:55 am michelle - OMG, I love your kitchen. great job! did you use carrara marble for countertops, if you did how are they holding up, I would like to use them when I replace the countertops in my kitchen.

August 9, 2010 - 9:18 pm sharon - how do you like your faucet so far? i want a bridge-style, my husband (who does all the dishes) wants a pull down sprayer. this is the only bridge-style pull-down sprayer i've run across, but i don't know what the quality of price pfister is, or if the sprayer requires the button to be held down. how have you liked it so far?

August 10, 2010 - 9:10 am rebekah - Hi Sharon! The sprayer works great, and we love the faucet - I'd say the quality seems fine. The button is for changing the spray from stream to rain shower (or whatever you call it). Good luck with your remodel!
